Our door-to-door Community Transport Service is for the whole community within the Borough of Great Yarmouth. We have had to adapt to be Covid-19 safe but out fully accessible minibuses are still acting as a lifeline for people. Anyone can use our buses who cannot access ordinary public transport and wants to stay connected with the local community. You do not have to have a disability.
Our fully accessible minibuses have secure anchor points for wheelchairs and tail-lifts for access. They also have an easy access side door for all passengers who are active and mobile. Whatever way you use our buses our friendly and helpful drivers will assist you safely on and off them. It is an affordable service that we are continually adapting so that we can serve our local community in the current situation.
Our normal operating hours for the service are between 10.30am to 3.30pm from Monday to Friday. Outside of these hours our buses are busy transporting our members to and from our Skills and Activities Centre. However, at the current time we are trying to be as flexible as possible, so if you have a transport need before 10.30am or after 3.30pm please call us on 01493 332253 and we will see if we can assist you.
Covid Safe Service
We know how important it is for people to feel safe when out and about, so here is what we are doing to keep you and our drivers safe:
All our drivers will be:
- taking your temperature using a non-contact thermometer, and if this is below 37.8°C you will be welcomed to travel on our bus.
- washing their hands regularly through the day, and if needed, will be using hand sanitiser to supplement hand washing
- wearing a face mask at all times, whilst travelling with passengers
- wearing gloves when clamping wheelchairs into the bus
- able to assist passengers that need help with taking their shopping into their home. Whilst they do this, we would ask you to remain in another room whilst they take your shopping to the kitchen and exit promptly
In line with current social distancing guidelines only 2 passengers, either seated or in wheelchairs, including escorts will be on the bus at any one time. Unless passengers are from the same household/support bubble.
Seated passengers will be asked, by the driver, to sit in a designated seat in the rear of the bus. No passengers will be able to travel in the front of the bus. If only one wheelchair or mobility scooter user is booked on the bus, this person will be located at the rear of the bus.
The interior of the bus will be cleaned with antibacterial spray after every use. At the end of the day the bus will be thoroughly cleaned and sanitized.
Passengers will be asked not to travel on our bus if they have had contact with any possible source of the corona virus or have any of the covid symptoms: a high temperature, a new persistent cough or respiratory problem, suffered from a recent loss of taste and/or smell
Passengers will be asked to wear a face covering unless they have a medical situation or disability that prevents this. Disposable masks are available on our buses if needed.
Everyone who uses our community transport needs to be a member. This costs just £10 a year, although there are exceptions detailed below. We are not a bus service and we are not a taxi service. we are something different and our service is special. Centre 81’s drivers will help you get from your home to the bus and at the end of your day out will make sure you get back safely to your home. Journey costs are much less than a taxi and a bit more than public transport fares. Unfortunately, we are unable to accept concessionary bus passes.
To become a full member either download the application form below or call us on 01493 332253 and we will post one to you. Once you have completed the application form, return it with your membership fee of £10 to Centre 81, Tar Works Road, Great Yarmouth NR30 1QR. Alternatively, you can email a completed form to firstname.lastname@example.org and make your payment online quoting your surname as a reference. Once we have received your completed and signed form, we will contact you by phone to welcome you as a member and discuss any transport needs you may have.
Are you currently unable to get out and do your shopping, either on a temporary or permanent basis. Then let us help and join our Personal Shopping Service. Whilst the current Covid restrictions are in place we are offering a personal shopping service on dedicated days of the week. All you need to do is call or email us before your agreed shopping day with your supermarket shopping list. Dedicated members of our staff will then do your shopping, where possible at the supermarket of your choice. Your shopping will then be delivered to your door, where you will need to pay for it plus a small delivery charge. All you need to do then is put it away. We have adapted our service to assist people in the Borough to attend medical appointments to have Covid Tests and Vaccinations and these work as follows:
Covid Tests – Our driver will collect you from your home address and take you to the test centre. If your test is at the JPH drive through service, you will stay seated on the bus and the testing staff member will come to you. If your test is at the walk in centre then our driver will wait in the car park. For both, once the test has been completed our driver will return you safely to your home.
The charge for this service is £5 temporary membership plus the return fare from you home to the test centre. People can use this service as many times as they would like. If after using this service you wish to up-grade to our full membership then you will only be charged the additional £5 if this is done within 3 months of your temporary membership.
Covid Vaccinations – As a dedicated service for the delivery of covid vaccinations our driver will collect you from your home address and take you to the centre where your vaccination has been booked. The driver will wait while you are having your vaccination and will return you home safely once you have finished. There is no membership fee payable for this service and the only charge will be the return fare from your home to the Vaccination Centre.
Norfolk and Norwich Hospital Transport
We are now able to offer transport to the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital for anyone living within the Borough of Great Yarmouth. Our driver will collect you from you home address and take you to the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital. If required, they will wait for you whilst you attend your appointment and then bring you safely home.
The charge for this service is a Fixed Charge of £40 which includes temporary membership. Additionally, there will be a charge of £10 per hour for every hour that the driver waits. For example: a two hour appointment would cost £40 plus £20 waiting time at total of £60.

We also support local clubs and societies by providing transport for their members. At the current time only, some groups have been able to operate safely within the Covid restrictions and we have adapted our services for them. Terms and conditions
- We operate under Section 19 of the Local Transport Act.
- We can accommodate an extensive range of mobility aids, including custom-built manual and electric wheelchairs. Unfortunately, we do not have the capacity to take large mobility scooters on our buses. If you need to travel with your scooter, please check with us first on 01493 332253.
- We understand that some people need more than one mobility aid throughout the day and in some circumstances we can accommodate both a wheelchair and mobility walker.
- We can provide transport for children under the age of 16 and have booster seats to meet legal requirements. If your son or daughter needs a child safety seat this should be provided by an accompanying adult. Please contact us to check the seat/bus compatibility.
- Passenger assistant dogs are welcome.
