As a charity, we are always in need of extra support for the work of the centre and the development of the skills of our members.

The centre and its members are truly grateful for every contribution, however small.

Finance team roll up sleeves for charity

Challenges of the global financial scene were left far behind as 24 staff from PricewaterhouseCoopers (PWC) rolled up their sleeves to help a Great Yarmouth charity.

The team from the Norwich office of the professional services company tackled a variety of jobs at Centre 81, which provides skills training and other activities for people with physical or sensory disabilities.

“It was a chance to put aside our calculators, get out into the local community and give some practical help to an excellent cause,” said Gareth Nicholls, marketing executive for PWC.

“We rebuilt a polytunnel for plants, painted preservative on to a shed, did some general gardening and created some disks for their computer system. Some of it was quite heavy work but we were happy to support Centre 81 where we have helped before and expect to be involved in their 30th anniversary next year.”

All the activity was part of a day put aside by PWC offices across the country for volunteer staff to help local charity or community causes. The emphasis was on ‘employability’ and they were impressed with Centre 81’s focus on developing members’ abilities. The project was one of four they tackled in the county.

“From our point of view, it is also a reminder that although we are a worldwide company, we have a Norwich office and want to remain close to our own community,” said Gareth. “Charities all need money but sometimes physical help can be just as valuable.”

Centre 81 manager Diana Staines said they were encouraged by the continuing relationship with PWC and grateful for the hard work their team had put in.

“We certainly hope they will be returning. Such support is a wonderful boost to our members and staff,” she said.
